Tips and Advice for Settling In...
- Keep all your receipts. Many moving expenses may be tax-deductible.
To find out which ones are, consult a tax advisor or refer to the
Internal Revenue Publication 521: Tax Information on Moving Expenses.
- Send Change-Of-Address cards to everyone who will need to contact you
at your new address. Some organizations have toll-free 800 numbers, so
you can make changes over the phone.
- Some clubs and organizations in your former place of residence may
offer partial refunds or allow you to sell unused portions of your
membership. Ask about their policies.
- Remember to change the locks on all the doors in your new home.
- Call the telephone company and order telephone directories for your
new community. And remember to save your old phone book-it may come
handy if you have to contact someone from your former place of
residence.
- Contact your former family doctor and dentist - and all of the
specialists you may have been to like pediatricians, obstetricians, and
eye doctors and get copies of your medical records. If you have a pet,
you will need their medical records too.
- And remember the other professionals: accountants, who will have
copies of your taxes, lawyers, insurance agents including both life and
auto/home coverage, stock brokers, and schools for the kid's records.
- Seek out new service providers such as a bank, cleaners,
veterinarian. (preferably the local merchants who have sponsored this
information!)
- Register to vote and notify your previous voting district of your
change of address.
- If you have moved from a different state, contact the Secretary of
State to exchange your driver's license.
- Did you remember to have your mail forwarded from your former
address? As you receive forwarded mail, ask yourself if you have
notified the sender of your new address. If not, inform them now.
- Find out what vaccinations, licenses and registrations you need for
your pet(s).
- Register your children in school.
